Current LOL research projects centered on landscape include:
Project: Heritage Forensics in the South Caucasus
Project Coordinators: Adam T. Smith & Lori Khatchadourian
Status: Ongoing
Description: Smith and Khatchadourian spearhead the Caucasus Heritage Watch (CHW) research group in the LOL along with CIAMS Research Associate Husik Ghulyan and CHW Co-Director Ian Lindsay (Purdue). CHW monitors cultural heritage at risk in the Nagorno-Karabakh region using earth observing satellites.
Project: Remote sensing at the site of Gegharot, Armenia: New insights into the organization of Late Bronze Age settlement.
Project Coordinators: Adam T. Smith (Cornell) & Ian Lindsay (Purdue)
Status: Complete
Description: A geophysical survey of the Late Bronze Age site using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). GPR results are being cross-referenced to the results of a prior magnetometry survey at the site to generate a details portrait of possible subsurface feature. The results of this research are providing a new view on unexcavated portions of the site and allowing for more targeted probes.
Publications: Initial results of the comparative geophysical research at Gegharot and Tsaghkahovit have been published in Antiquity 88 (2014): 578-595.
Project: Remote sensing at the site of Tsaghkahovit, Armenia: empire, satrapy, and settlement in the Iron 3 (Achaemenid) period.
Project Coordinator: Lori Khatchadourian
Status: Complete
Description: A geophysical survey of portions of the Iron 3 town using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR).
